Welcome to the Donald E. Schick Music Page! Check the pages at the top to see what your students are doing in music class to become Tuneful, Beatful, and Artful. You can also get in contact with Miss Brumbaugh or Miss Fish and check out some cool music links!
Students at Donald E. Schick Elementary School have general music in all grades, from Kindergarten through fifth grade. Classes are 40 minutes each and they meet twice every six days. In general music, a focus is put on developing the inner musician. The goal is for the students to come away with a love and an understanding of music; that they will be “tuneful, beatful, and artful” and contribute to their society in creative and meaningful ways.
Using a variety of methods, students will be singing, playing instruments, improvising, composing, listening to, describing, and evaluating music as often as possible. Music literacy, music appreciation, and understanding music are the three staples in each grade.
Third graders will play recorders in general music. This is an excellent preparation for joining band in fourth grade.
Fifth graders will play ukuleles in general music. This instrument prepares them for guitar classes in middle school, as well as builds their music literacy skills. In fourth and fifth grades, students have the opportunity to join band and chorus. These large ensembles rehearse once every six days for 30 minutes. There is one concert in December and another in May. Students will be exposed to a variety of instrumental and choral literature. In chorus, they will learn the foundations of good singing, including posture and vocal production. In band, they will learn the foundations of instrumental technique and tone production all while continuing to build their skills in literacy and musicianship.
